Our Pastor here at Heritage, since November of 1994, is Rev. Beverly White. She considers being a Pastor her third career. Her first career was as a stay-at-home mom for a number of years. She has two adult children, and one of the joys of her current life is being a Grandma to four grandchildren under the age of six!
Her second career was as a banker in southern California where she was an Operations Officer and then a Loan Officer. She left that career and went to Fuller Seminary in Pasadena, California, from 1984-1987. After her graduation, she was ordained (her third career).
From 1987- 1990, she and her husband, Shel, worked together as pastors in a Presbyterian church in Whittier, California. They moved up to the Bay Area in 1990, and both found jobs in different churches. She commuted from their home in Martinez to San Francisco for over three years, when she was the Interim Associate at Calvary Presbyterian Church.
Since she has been here at Heritage, she has brought us much needed healing and spiritual growth. Music is an important part of her life, and with her leadership and our various wonderful music directors, we have developed a Blended Worship service that has older, more traditional music, as well as lots of newer music. We are currently striving to integrate more technology (power point presentations, for example) in our celebrations, as well as holding onto those parts of worship that touch us deeply and help us to grow spiritually.
Since it is important to us to be involved in and with our community, Beverly has become active in various organizations in Benicia. She has been a Volunteer Police Chaplain with the Benicia Police Department for a number of years. As an active member of the Benicia Rotary Club, she is a board member and in charge of various Community Activities. For the past four years, she has been a volunteer mentor at Liberty High School. And, she has participated in all of the Every Fifteen Minutes programs at Benicia High School.
When asked to name the two most important things about faith to her, she responded:
1. Grace! God’s grace – love and acceptance – is such an incredible gift given to us all! We don’t have to – and can’t – earn it. We just have to open it up and let it permeate our entire being!
2. Jesus loved everybody – and that is what we are supposed to do! Everyone – absolutely everyone – is welcome here!
